Party on with Pirate's Choice-- an all-star supergroup, a collective of like-minded musicians, a way of life.
Pirate's Choice initially started as a conversation between Luke Quaranta (of Toubab Krewe), Raja Kassis (of Antibalas, Raja Kassis' humanBEING), and Sam Dickey (of Benyoro). The group's mission is clear: to explore and expand upon the music of Africa (particularly West Africa), and its deep connections to American popular music and other diasporic styles. The group's name is drawn from a classic album by the legendary Senegalese band Orchestra Baobab, and is simultaneously a reference to the golden era of post-independence music in West Africa, as well as the nomadic lifestyle of modern working musicians.
Collectively, the core members of Pirate's Choice have a common bond, traveling to the continent numerous times, cutting their teeth performing and studying with many West African legends such as Toumani Diabaté, Oumou Sangare, Fatou Guewel, and Kiné Lam. Drawing from this experience, and in keeping with its underlying philosophy, the group features a revolving line-up of musicians and special guests from a variety of styles and backgrounds. Pirate's Choice pays homage to the traditional ensembles and innovative orchestras of the West African post-independence era, while also taking the tradition to new places.
