Every Thursday night at the historic Maple Leaf Bar in New Orleans, the Booker & Beyond Piano Series celebrates the rich piano traditions of the Crescent City. Made possible through a generous bequest from Tim Allspach, known as "Professor Tim"—an educator, musician, and beloved fixture at the Maple Leaf Bar—the series honors the legendary James Carroll Booker, the piano genius whose virtuosic style blended jazz, classical, blues, and gospel.
Featuring some of New Orleans' most talented pianists performing solo in the intimate back bar setting, these Thursday evening sessions typically run from 6-7:30 PM. Bill Malchow is a roots pianist and vocalist who divides his time between New York City and New Orleans, blending Fats Waller-style Harlem stride with the steaming sounds of Dr. John, James Booker, Allen Toussaint, and Professor Longhair.
