About The Event
OTRA: A Tribute to Michael Skinkus
Come celebrate the life and legacy of Michael Skinkus — master percussionist, educator, ethnomusicologist, and one of the most beloved figures in New Orleans music — as OTRA, the Afro-Cuban jazz band he called home, takes the Maple Leaf stage in his honor.
Born outside Philadelphia in 1969, Michael arrived in New Orleans in 1987 and never left. For nearly four decades, he was a fixture on stages across the city, lending his extraordinary gifts to the Latin, African, Jazz, and Afro-Cuban scenes that define this town's musical soul. He performed alongside Irma Thomas, Dr. John, The Radiators, and countless others, appeared at Jazz Fest more times than most can count, and touched the lives of students at Country Day School, Young Audiences, and Delgado University. He held a Master's in Ethnomusicology from Tulane and shared that knowledge freely, passionately, and joyfully with anyone…
